Absolutely sublime! There are no other words I can use to define the amazing experience I lived on July 9th in the Casa de la Cultura Raul Otero Reiche of the City of Santa Cruz de la Sierra.
It was a unique opportunity, due to three important facts: First, the fact of already having a mature, professional and international projection string orchestra like the Camerata del Oriente. The second one, the fact of having counted with the presence of an outstanding trumpet and an unequaled master in classical music: Reinhold Friedrich. And third but not least: Having attended the premiere of a piece of work like no other: The Brandenburg concerto No. 2 by Johann Sebastian Bach, never before performed in our country.
But why is this so important? The truth is that Bolivia already has such outstanding symphony orchestras, standing of course the National Symphony Orchestra, which more than once represented us in such valuable way. It is also true that the complexity of Bach's work did not allow us to have a trumpet player that can play it in all its splendor. And it was Reinhold Friedrich's visit which gave us this chance, and hopefully not the last, to delight such sublime work of the eighteenth-century German composer.
The Camerata del Oriente already had a visit from another great artist: Leonard Elschenbroich, one of the most renowned artists in the world of cello, who spoke with very nice words about the Camerata del Oriente and the great discipline and commitment of Bolivian artists. They also accompanied The Rositas, a delirious trio of beautiful and very talented argentinian violinists who played classics and argentinian tangos with a touch of modern fusion.
But this performance of Friedrich Reinhold is even more remarkable because of the simplicity, humility, and the great joy of this trumpet player to share some of the Santa Cruz and Bolivian music. As it could not be otherwise the master closed the concert with an exciting Guajojó taquirari solo. The excitement was even bigger when a traditional Santa Cruz "buri" band was waiting the orchestra at the hall of the Casa de la Cultura and put us all to dance. Friedrich shared with everyone at the concert the lively nature of Bolivia's eastern people. It is also uncountable the number of pictures that the trumpeter was shot with anyone who liked a photography of this memorable ceremony.
But, who Reinhold Friedrich is? Born in Weingarten, Baden, debuted in Vienna's Musikverein in 1994 with the Trumpet Concerto by Joseph Haydn. He is professor of trumpet at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe and honorary professor at the Royal Accademy of Music in London, Aarhus, Danmark and Hiroshima, Japan. He played with Capriccio Basel, Orchestre des Champs-Élysées or the Vienna Academy on period instruments. On the other hand, there are world premieres by Wolfgang Rihm, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Rebecca Saunders, Hans Werner Henze, Christian Wolff, Herbert Willi, Benedict Mason, Luca Lombardi, Nicolaus A. Huber, Hilda Paredes, Adriana Hölszky Caspar and J. Walter. He has solo concerts like "Irene" by Herbert Willi, "Nobody Knows the Trouble I See" by Bernd Alois Zimmermann (excellent CD recording of the ECHO-Klassik) important parts of his wide-ranging repertoire.
We're anxious to see what new celebrities will the Camerata del Oriente be with. The truth is that we expect big surprises. By now, I am counting the days for the premiere of their new season called 180°, which promises more soloist guests. Impossible to miss.
